Research approach

Follow the evidence.
Understand the outlook.

Our analytical framework connects market conditions, company fundamentals and the assumptions behind a forecast.

The framework / 01

Three levels.
One connected view.

Market conditions

Demand, inflation, interest rates and industry structure establish the wider setting. The key is to identify which conditions are relevant to the question and over what period.

Business fundamentals

Revenue composition, operating margins, cash flow and financing reveal how a company is positioned within that setting. Accounting changes and one-time items need to be separated from recurring performance.

Scenario assumptions

Growth, profitability and valuation assumptions connect the evidence to possible outcomes. A forecast should make those assumptions visible and identify what would challenge them.

Research process / 02

Make the reasoning visible.

01 / Frame

Define the question.

Specify the subject, geography, time horizon and intended use. Set a clear scope for the research and decide which evidence would answer the question.

02 / Examine

Evaluate the inputs.

Review source dates, definitions and coverage. Compare like-for-like periods and distinguish reported results, revised figures and estimates.

03 / Explain

Connect the findings.

Present the relevant drivers, alternative interpretations and unresolved questions. Explain the assumptions and limitations alongside the conclusion.

A worked framework / 03

Reading an
equity outlook.

Consider a company whose demand outlook improves while its borrowing costs increase. Stronger sales alone do not explain the full outlook: margins, debt exposure, cash generation and the valuation already reflected in the market also matter.

Base conditions

Define a starting set of assumptions for sales growth, operating margins and financing costs. Describe the reporting period and sources behind those assumptions.

Stronger conditions

Explore how firmer demand or improved operating efficiency could change the business outlook. Keep the assumptions internally consistent rather than changing every variable in a favorable direction.

Weaker conditions

Examine slower demand, margin pressure or more expensive financing. Identify the financial and operational indicators that would make this scenario more relevant.

This is an illustrative analytical framework, not a published forecast for a particular company, a client case study or a performance record.
